Brebeuf College in Toronto celebrates 50 years

Date: 30 Apr 2014

Brebeuf College School in Toronto is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend with a series of special ceremonies.

Messages of congratulations have been pouring in including greetings from Canadian Prime Minister, Mr Stephen Harper and the Archbishop of Toronto, Cardinal Thomas Collins.

Take a look at the letters in the special commemorative book (pdf) prepared for the occasion.

In his message to the school, Brother Martin Kenneally, Congregation Leader of the Presentation Brothers, recalled the contribution of two Brothers:

In recalling the Presentation history of Brebeuf, I want to pay special tribute to the late and much loved Br Lawrence Maher. His time as principal is recalled with special affection by so many.

Br Henry Spencer continues to maintain a presence in the Chaplaincy Department of the school. Who can fail to be inspired by his enthusiasm and generosity?

Brother Lawrence Maher will be inducted posthumously into the Order of St John de Brebeuf this weekend. Details of the Gala Dinner at www.Brebeuf50th.com

School principal, Mr Anthony Azzopardi, also offered a reflection for the occasion:

This 50th anniversary celebration has provided many opportunities to connect with our past, better understand our roots, and envision what we want Brebeuf College School to be today and in the years to come. In September of 1963, when Brebeuf College School opened its doors, the Beach Boys released a song called “Be True To Your School”. There are so many individuals with a strong connection to Brebeuf College School. They demonstrate their pride in our community and the school’s motto Studio Gradum Faciant (Merit Through Study) by applying the lessons they learned to the work they do, by actively participating in their communities and most importantly, by continuing to grow in faith in God and service to others.

A special prayer has been composed to mark the school's Golden Jubilee:

Anniversary Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank you for all the graces you have given Brebeuf College School over the past fifty years. Your care and concern for our Christian Community has been shown in so many ways for the students, the staff, the teachers and the administrators. We ask that you bless those who had the foresight to see the need for Brebeuf in the middle of an open field in 1963.

As we go forward into the second fifty years and towards our Centennial, we ask you to bless each of us and ask that you give us the grace and help we need to come closer to you and to share your love with those around us. We pray that we may always be “men for others” in all we do and say following in the footsteps of St. Jean de Brebeuf and Blessed Edmund Rice. May Mary our Mother bring forward our prayers to you, Heavenly Father, and may we give praise and thanksgiving through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
