The annual Edmund Rice Awards ceremony took place at 'The Mon' National School in Killarney today (Thursday 12th June 2014).

Pupils from Scoil Muire na Mainistreach, Killarney; Nagle-Rice N.S. in Miltown, Co. Kerry and St Brendan's N.S. in Birr, Co. Offaly gave presentations on their project work from the past several months.

This year's presentations were varied and colourful. Pupils from 'The Mon' gave a PowerPoint presentation on their school's 175th anniversary and told the story of the arrival of the Brothers in the town.

The pupils from Miltown spoke about their fundraising work for the Irish Cancer Society on 'Daffodil Day'. A group from the school had also visited a local home for the elderly and played music for them. Today's assembly got a taste of those tunes as the pupils performed a number of pieces on violins, flute and guitar.

Finally, the students from St Brendan's N.S. in Birr performed a "This is your life"-style drama of the life of Blessed Edmund Rice. They also demonstrated that the old and new can sit side by side by performing a rap, "Rice, Rice, baby", before also performing the traditional, "Fields of Athenry".

Brother Andrew Hickey, Province Leader of the Presentation Brothers in Ireland, congratulated the children and handed each a special certificate. The event was also attended by Brothers from our International Novitiate Community in Killarney, including Duglus and Colins who recently joined the Brothers.
