Edmund Rice Awards

Date: 01 Jun 2016

Venue: Mary Immaculate College, Limerick

The annual Edmund Rice Awards took place yesterday, on Tuesday 31st May 2016, at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

Blessed with a beautifully warm day, 5th class students and staff from Presentation Monastery, Killarney, Co Kerry and St Brendan's Primary School, Birr, Co Offaly, gathered for the celebration, organised by PBYM.

The day started at 12pm, with some music, which was led by the PBYM team: Coordinator Silvia Maria Crowley, novices David, Stan, Doug and Theiva, novice director Br Barry Noel, and volunteers John and Grace. After this, there was an introduction from Br Andrew Hickey. Silvia Maria Crowley then introduced the schools' presentations.

Birr started with a play on the life of Blessed Edmund Rice. Each of the 25 students engaged in a lively and poignant retelling of Edmund's story, while also talking about how the vision and ethos of Blessed Edmund's life still impacts their lives today. Students from the Mon brought to life a wonderful presentation about how Presentation Brothers changed Killarney. It was a well-researched and interesting project, celebrating the last 178 years of their school, and the ways Blessed Edmund Rice's message still blossoms in the town today.

Br Andrew then handed out certificates to the students, before a time of celebration, lunch and some games in the hot afternoon sunshine.

It was a wonderful occasion, and the Awards will return again next year.
