Brother Francis Clement McCarthy of Presentation Brothers, Maiville, Turners Cross, Cork died peacefully in the Cork University Hospital, Cork at 01.50pm on Tuesday, 16th February, 2015.
Brother Clement was born to Daniel and Johanna (Browne) McCarthy in Knocknasna, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick on 4th July 1930. He entered the Presentation Brothers at Mount St Joseph, Cork in 1948. He made his First Profession of Vows in 1950 and his Final Profession in 1953.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Tess McCarthy; his nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, relatives and friends; and his Presentation Brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Michael and Patrick; his sisters, Monica, Maureen and Vera.
Brother Clement was educated at Knocknasna National School, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick; Coláiste Muire, Douglas Road, Cork; St Teresa’s College, Passage West, Co. Cork; University College, Cork and the Milltown Institute, Dublin. He taught in Coláiste Muire, Cork; Presentation Brothers College, Cork; Presentation College, Cobh, Co. Cork; Coláiste Thérèse, Greenmount, Cork and Presentation College, Bray, Co. Wicklow. He served as Principal at Coláiste Thérèse, Cork; Presentation College, Cobh and Presentation College, Bray. He retired from teaching in 1990.
He served as Superior of the Communities at Mardyke House, Cork; Coláiste Thérèse, Cork; Cobh, Co. Cork; Bray, Co. Wicklow and Mount St Joseph, Cork. He also served as Bursar at Mount St Joseph, Cork.
Brother Clement served as Vocations Director, 1956-1958 and 1980-1984. He was Master of Novices, 1984-1986. He was a member of the retreat team at Mount St Joseph Retreat Centre, 1987-1990.
Funeral Arrangements: Rosary at the Presentation Brothers House, Maiville on this (Wednesday) evening at 08.00pm. Lying in Repose on Thursday, 18th February, from 04.00pm until Removal at 07.00pm to Church of Christ the King, Turners Cross, Cork. Requiem Mass on Friday, 19thFebruary, at 11.00am. Burial afterwards at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, Blarney Street, Cork.
